A Short Post About Pit Bulls

Buddy and Ginger
Pit Bulls will undoubtedly be demonized again once people forget about the whole Vick thing.

So before that happens, and for the sake of argument, let’s say many people hurt other people; shooting, raping, destroying lives. Let’s say some people in this country claim the moral authority to send other people to die in a faraway desert. Let’s say some people gain power by demonizing an Other. Let’s say people destroy their planet. And let’s say (again, just for the sake of argument), that we are sad little creatures with an unfulfilled potential for greatness, who from the moment each and every one of us is born can only think, “How can I get my hands on the world’s limited resources?” and “What’s in it for me?”

But even if we decide to subscribe to this sad view of the world (and it’s a conscious decision. Nothing here or anywhere else is a truism), is that enough for us to lose faith in the human race?

What I’m saying is, leave my Pit Bulls alone.

What's in it for me if I leave them alone?

Yeah I read about that too in one of the blogs. More pitbulls have been harmed by humans than vice versa. So who needs to be demonized ?

I think I'm better off totally confused here. :-0 I'm all for people adoring their animals and vice versa though, just for the record. And I do think that any animal can be vicious and that cherished animals are less likely so, whichever the breed.

Maybe I was confusing... but hey--that's what I think about when I hear people talk about banning Pit Bulls. Right now, for a short time, people think about the reasons Pit Bulls are aggressive (dog-fighting celebrity douches), but soon, when people forget, the calls to ban the breed will continue, and that's unfortunate because if all we're talking about is the danger to human beings, we should probably ban humans first.

Oh! Well maybe I would have been less confused if I knew there was such a thing as banning pit bulls!!!! What does that mean exactly?

I love pit bulls! They are cute!

Jill, it's about Breed Specific Legislation. They're banned in some places and have mandatory neutering in other places, which means breeding them is forced underground to people who breed them to fight.

Enemy, that's what I'm talking about.

It's not the fault of the breed; it's the fault of the douchebag owner or trainer if a dog is vicious. The one time I ever got bitten by a dog it was a Golden Retreiver. That same owner also owned a Pit Bull and a German Shepherd which had no record of ever biting anyone (I was the 3rd person bitten by their Golden Retreiver).

That oughtta tweak a few stereotypes.

So so true,

Dogs in general can do bad things but often it's the sad little human that owns them that pushes their brains to operate this way.

Thanks for visiting my blog. Did you read my post about the Pitbull and the porcupine ordeal I recently went through? It's called 2 Dogs and Porcupine if you want to see it. I won't post the link and make a shamless plug that way though! Ooops I kind of already have!

PS, I like your template, where can I get it?

Punish the deed not the breed. so many pits are great dogs!

Tom, Buddy (the old guy on the right) was also attacked by a German Shepherd. He was wearing a cone at the time after hurting his nail. It was sad to see him defenseless like that (I got home from work and he was there, after being attacked by a roommate's dog), but it was also really cute. I think driving him to the vet was the first time I felt my fatherly instincts.

Forest, actually you didn't put the link, so here. That's a crazy story. You know these dogs have a high threshold for pain, so it must have been really bad.

Jean, yes, and yet legislation focuses on slowly killing the entire breed. I can't imagine having any other pet.

Forest, sorry, I forgot to answer your question. The template is the basic regular template from Blogger ("Minima Black"), but I've played around with it every now and then, and I'm far from a finished product, but I don't really know what I'm doing. The only thing I can say is look at the links in the "Thanks" button on the right. Mostly I just found stuff there. I'm glad you like it.

Breed legislation is yet another form of discrimination. It's amazing how humans need to discriminate or oppress others.
It's slowly spreading & becoming obvious around the globe that discriminating against people for color, religion, sex, age (I'm sure I missed a few that the imaginative evils have come up with) is wrong so it's moving to include other species since the arrogant human thinks it was left boss of the universe.

Fine job (mess) we're doing so far. The more you live with animals, the more you realize how parasitic (is that a word?) humans are!

I have just rescued a cutey Pit named Tallulah. You can see her pictures here - http://www.styleswag.com/animals-help-and-buy-for-pets/look-at-meim-a-puppy.html

Mickie, that was the cutest thing I've ever seen. We didn't get to see ours when they were puppies. They were actually raised as fighting dogs--the big one as the one other dogs trained on--and eventually when they weren't needed anymore (he was injured and she was too small), they were left tied to a tree in Prospect Park.

Stories like that make me ashamed to be human. We are the only species that hunts for sport and we don't even have the balls to make it a fair fight. We go after Bambi with an assault rifle or something.

Our little pitbully was also attacked and left in a trash can. She had a puncture wound over on eye and bite marks on her neck and her little black nose was pierced through. But all better now!

i work at a vet clinic and we see pit bulls almost on a daily basis...before i started working with animals, i had NEVER been around a pit bull, and was absolutely terrified because of all public bashing against these dogs. i don't think there could be a sweeter dog than a pit bull. in fact, three of my favorite breeds all fall into the category of what uninformed individuals refer to as "bully breeds"...pit bulls, rotties, and dobermans. i have been bitten, or almost bitten, by more yorkies and pekingese than any other dogs...and have received more kisses from pitbulls and dobermans. the bigger breeds are picked on b/c these are the dogs that are treated horribly and taught to be aggressive...i hate to see bands on the best dogs because of human stupidity and media nonsense.

Mickie, left in a trash can... Man... At least the people in Brooklyn gave our dogs a bigger chance of survival. And I understand what you say about humans. It's kind of what I was trying to say in the post (but it came out a bit confused, I think). Yes, people do horrible things (to themselves and to other animals), but that's not enough to lose hope in humanity. Every time a baby is born we look at the potential for good. All I want is the same kind of optimistic consideration for Pit Bulls.

And as for hunting, I'd understand the thrill of it all--maybe even agree to call it a sport--if they go after animals with frickin' spears, but they go there with gigantic guns, shooting animals in cages... It makes so much sense Cheney is a hunter.

Lindsay, I was chased by a puppy when I was eight and was afraid of all types of dogs until I ended up with these two by chance. I couldn't be around any type of dog until I was twenty-six, and I used to think that when a dog jumped on me and the owner said, "Don't worry, he's just playing," it was the most offensive thing in the world. Funny, now I'm offended if people don't let the dogs jump on them. I guess I'm just easily offended.

Wonderful analysis ;) Your pibbles are beautiful!

Thanks, Jen. I thought I was getting a bit lost in space there. I'm glad some of what I was trying to get through made a little bit of sense in the end.
